Milk

How much is a child’s hand of sunlight?
Maybe a thimble — how much does it weigh?
Would an ounce of love be enough
to slake a chronic wound? Would a gram
of deceit uncoil it? We lose milk
by the gallon. We lose children
by the mouthful.
We lose children this way.
