This morning, coyotes
circled the town — announced
their connivance: yips and wails
from the ridge and beans. This morning,
the neighborhood cats, loosed into
night, hunched in the hedges
and their eyes in the beam
of my flashlight were green
and unflinching.
The dog stiffened
and turned for home.
There was little to do
but heed. The leash led the way.
